The Bede Program in Arts and Humanities
Bede Scholars value and enjoy the study of the arts and humanities as a means of understanding themselves and their place in the world. The program is named after a Benedictine monk of the early Middle Ages who was a theologian, a poet and a historian. Like Bede, participants in this program will be interested in faith, literature and history out of curiosity about the origins and development of their own and other cultures, past and present. They may be the kinds of individuals who enrich their own lives, and those of their families and friends, through writing, story-telling and other means of cultural expression, and may aspire to pursue careers as authors, journalists, teachers, guides, or curators, or to attend graduate school.

Although there are no classes associated with the program, Bede scholars will meet frequently throughout the semester to discuss readings, attend plays, hear lectures and visit museums. These experiences will augment and enhance their understanding of the past and the present, and will help students develop their skills as critical and independent thinkers. They will also help Bede Scholars form bonds of friendship and create lasting relationships that will continue to sustain and inspire them throughout their lives.

Some of those who participate in the program may decide to pursue a minor in Christianity and Culture, as part of which they will have the opportunity to travel to Ireland, Britain and Rome for overseas study

Eligibility: Minimum non-weighted grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Duration: The Bede Program in Arts and Humanities is a $5,000 award renewable for up to four years, and cannot be coupled with any other scholarship opportunities from Belmont Abbey College.
